WILL CONSIDER REJOINING NDA IF ADVANI RETURNS TO HELM-SHARAD YADAV

Picture
Patna. A day after walking out of NDA, JD(U) president Sharad Yadav on Monday said his party could consider coming back to the alliance if veteran BJP leader L K Advani gets back at the helm of the party.
"Advani aye to dekha jayanga (we will see if Advani returns at the helm of affairs)," Yadav told reporters before going to a JD(U) meeting meet at chief minister Nitish Kumar's official residence.
"We had fought 2009 elections projecting Advani as our prime ministerial candidate," Yadav, who announced resigning as NDA convener yesterday, said.
He asked mediapersons to ask BJP leaders about this (Advani's return at helm of party affairs).
"He (Advani) has been sidelined within the party," he said expressing pain for the veteran BJP leader.
The JD(U) president had announced break-up with NDA on Sunday after walking together for 17 long years over elevation of Narendra Modi as campaign committee chief of BJP for 2014 elections.
Chief minister Nitish Kumar today accused its estranged ally of "betraying" and "cornering" elders in the party in an oblique reference to Advani over the Narendra Modi issue.

NITISH DOES NOT RULE OUT THIRD FRONT;SP,TDP GIVE BACKING

Picture
Patna/Lucknow. Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday did not rule out emergence of a Third Front, which was also favoured
by the Samajwadi Party, after the BJP-JD(U) face-off triggered the possibility of a non-Congress, non-BJP grouping to fight the next Lok Sabha polls. The prospect of a Third Front was, however, not visualized by the CPM, JD-S and the RJD while TDP supported formation of such a grouping.
With the 17-year-old BJP-JD(U) alliance staring at uncertainty, Kumar, who had telephonic talks with his West Bengal and Odisha
counterparts Mamata Banerjee and Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday, said a "federal front", the idea mooted by Trinamool leader, could take shape. Patnaik has already said there is a scope for a grouping without Congress and BJP. "We have common cause ... we are talking ... though it is early to talk about formation of a front but it could take shape in future," Kumar said in Patna.
"Mamata Banerjee's view is that Bihar, Orissa, West Bengal and Jharkhand have some common problems and we should think about them together. I have also said that these problems which are common," he said. "If all of us together understand these problems and form a common front it would be good ... This is at an initial stage," he added. Uttar Pradesh chief minister and Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav also echoed the need for a Third Front. Akhilesh said both the BJP as well as the Congress have failed to deliver at the Centre.
"There are many issues on which the Congress and the BJP have been unsuccessful. The time has come for the nation to have a Third
Front government," he said.
However, former Prime Minister and JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda, one of the architects of Third Front in 1996-98, did not visualize such a prospect. "There is no Third Front as such ... If any non-Congress, non-BJP government is formed by regional parties, we will support," he said.
Another regional satrap Lalu Prasad of the RJD said there is no scope for existence of a Third Front. TDP leader N Chandrababu
Naidu, a Third Front architect along with Gowda, was enthusiastic about formation of a non-Congress, non-BJP alternative.
"All parties, particularly the regional parties, have a responsibility to see that a third alternative to the UPA and the BJP is formed. So, we will definitely be part of the Federal Front," the former chief minister asserted. Ruling out any effort by it for a Third Front for Lok Sabha elections, CPM said it would however strive for a Left democratic alternative of regional parties for "adjustments".
The non-Congress, non-BJP front would only be a temporary arrangement based on (seat) "adjustments and tactics" as part of CPM's
electoral strategy, CPM general secretary Prakash Karat said in Thrissur.Replying to a question on a new non-Congress non-BJP front proposed by Mamata Banerjee,he said no discussion in this regard had been held in CPM.
Karat, however, asserted "the question of having an alliance with the Trinamool Congress does not arise at all. Several CPM activists in West Bengal have been attacked by the Trinamool Congress workers," he said. On West Bengal CPM leaders' reported idea of supporting the Congress on the lines of the UPA-I, he dismissed it as "a figment of imagination by the mediamen".

ADVANI WITHDRAWS RESIGNATION

Picture
Shri.Lal Krishna Advani,BJP Supreme Leader.
New Delhi. BJP on Tuesday reached a truce with sulking patriarch L K Advani who agreed not to press for his resignation from key party posts after RSS intervened to end the two-day crisis triggered by his opposition to Narendra Modi's elevation.
"Today afternoon, RSS sarsanghchalak (chief) Shri Mohan Bhagwat spoke to Shri Advani and asked him to respect BJP parliamentary board decision and continue to guide the party in national interest.
"Shri Advani has decided to accept Shri Bhagwat's advice," said a statement read out by party president Rajnath after meeting Advani in the company of other leaders.
Flanked by leaders including Sushma Swaraj and Nitin Gadkari, Singh made the announcement at Advani's residence but the party veteran was conspicuous by his absence.
Asked why Advani was not present, Singh said, "I told him that this is my press conference and it will not look nice that you sit and hear me."
In a bid to mollify Advani, Singh said he had assured him that all his "concerns" regarding functioning of the party, which he had cited as a reason for quitting the party posts, would be "properly addressed".
"The president will discuss the modalities of addressing these concerns with Shri Advani," Singh said without elaborating.
Earlier in the day, the party chief made it clear that there will be no going back on the decision to appoint Modi as campaign committee chief, a major cause for Advani's resignation.
The denouement to the two-day political drama came after hectic parleys and persuasion by a number of leaders who met Advani and impressed on him the need to end the crisis triggered by his resignation.

RUPEE RECOVERS FROM RECORD LOW
Most dealers rule out any intervention by the RBI so far in the market, citing largely brokerages and foreign banks being on the sell side.

Mumbai. The RUPEE recovered sharply from record lows on Tuesday afternoon, as three dealers cited DOLLAR sales by state-run banks on behalf of the central bank.
However, they said the size of intervention from the Reserve Bank of India did not seem too large, with the steep recovery in the rupee being exaggerated by illiquid conditions in currency markets.
The partially convertible rupee was trading at 58.47/48 per dollar at 2:04 p.m., off a record low of 58.98 hit earlier in the day, but still weaker than its close of 58.15/16 on Monday.

BJP SET TO NAME NARENDRA MODI AS 2014 CAMPAIGN CHIEF,ADVANI UNHAPPY

Picture
Panaji (GOA). BJP is preparing to name Gujarat CM Narendra Modi as head of its campaign committee for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections - a likely precursor to declaring him a PM candidate — despite veteran leader L K Advani's vehement resistance.
There is a large consensus over Modi even as Advani's absence from BJP deliberations on Friday sparked a fresh controversy. An announcement on Modi leading the BJP campaign is likely to be made 0nSunday.
RSS and the BJP leadership, according to party sources, have backed the move. In a brief remark during a meeting of BJP office-bearers on Friday, BJP chief Rajnath Singh said there will be clarity on several issues before the party.
Advani, it is learnt, is upset over being disregarded by the BJP leadership on crucial decisions in recent days, and naming Modi as the party's campaign in-charge is the last straw as it will clearly set the CM above other leaders. The high-voltage drama over his absence unfolded as Advani stayed away from a party executive for the first time since BJP's inception in 1980.
However, hectic efforts are on to get Advani to reach Goa. With RSS having endorsed Modi's role, the BJP chief is doing his best to ensure the announcement be made by Advani himself. Depending on whether Advani keeps well on Saturday, a chartered flight has been kept as an option to bring him over to Goa, it is learnt.
The "official" explanation that Advani is unwell failed to wash as party leaders confirmed that he remains strongly opposed to any decision that signals Modi's special status in the BJP.

MODI MEETS ADVANI AFTER BYPOLL SWEEP,LALU GAINS IN BIHAR, CONGRESS LOSES

Picture
New Delhi. Narendra Modi, riding a sweeping victory in the Gujarat byelections, on Wednesday met BJP president Rajnath Singh amid indications that he may be made the head of the party's campaign committee for next Lok Sabha elections at the national executive meet in Goa this weekend.
BJP's impressive victory wresting the two Lok Sabha and four assembly seats from Congress formed the backdrop for the Singh-Modi meeting. Modi, who is here to attend the chief ministers' conference on internal security, met Singh and discussed the forthcoming Goa conclave and the issue of formation of the campaign committee. While there is a clamour among the cadre and vast sections of BJP leaders for making Modi, Gujarat chief minister, the head of the committee, senior party leader LK Advani reportedly has some reservations.
Modi also met Advani who congratulated him over the byelection victory. The top leadership is said to be mulling over whether two committees — an election management committee for the forthcoming assembly polls in five states and a campaign committee for the Lok Sabha polls- should be formed or a single panel be constituted for both.
'No secular govt possible without Lalu' Buoyed by the victory in the Maharajganj Lok Sabha bypoll in Bihar, RJD on Wednesday said it was time for Congress to introspect as no secular government without Lalu Prasad will be possible at the Centre after the next polls.
"Countdown has begun for the Nitish Kumar government. It is the defeat of the arrogance of the chief minister. Bihar will play a role at the national level. There will be no secular government at the Centre without Lalu Prasad," party general secretary Vijay Krishna said.
A friend-turned-foe of Nitish Kumar, Krishna told NNA that the RJD victory has exposed that the Bihar chief minister's plank of  development was hollow and that his media management has failed to work.
Krishna, who is chief spokesman of RJD, said that this was especially so in view of the fact that in states where bypolls were held, the ruling party has lost only in Bihar. He said that the role of the Congress in the bypoll was "unfortunate" and the party needed to introspect.
Congress candidate had come a poor third in the bypoll which was won by RJD's Prabhunath Singh with a margin of over 1.37 lakh
votes.
In a move to position itself neutrally in Bihar ahead of next Lok Sabha elections, Congress has now been talking of its "Ekla Chalo" (go alone) stand claiming "equidistance" from both JD-U and Lalu Prasad's RJD. Party leaders have been saying that Congress is still in "no mood" to ally with any party for the next elections there.
Lalu Prasad's party, which was a constituent in UPA-I is currently supporting UPA-II government from outside. It has four MPs.
In recent months, there has been intense speculation about Kumar quitting NDA to join hands with Congress, which had fought the last Lok Sabha election on its own breaking off ties with RJD.

L.K.ADVANI PROPS SHIVRAJ SINGH CHOUHAN,RUNS DOWN NARENDRA MODI

Picture
NNA NETWORK
Gwalior.
Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi maybe riding high on popularity but his troubles with party seniors is not over yet. At least the battle between Modi and veteran LK Advani
continues.
The octogenarian former deputy prime minister on Saturday not only propped Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan against Narendra Modi, but even compared the Chouhan to former NDA PM Atal Behari Vajpayee. "I hail from Gujarat. But, I want Madhya Pradesh to get its
position in the world," LK Advani said, addressing a massive BJP workers' conclave in here in Gwalior on Friday.
"I often tell Nadrendra Modi that Gujarat was already an economically healthy state when he was sent as chief minister. He has only made Gujarat a better state. But, Madhya Pradesh was a 'bimaru' state, and it underwent a total developmental change and evolved as a healthy state for
which I give full credit to Shivraj Singh Chouhan."
While Narendra Modi was inducted into the BJP parliamentary board two months ago, LK Advani had supported the inclusion of Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan along with the Gujarat CM. It is well-known in BJP circles that Chouhan was being supported as an
alternative to Narendra Modi. Modi entered BJP Parliamentary Board -- the highest decision making body of the party, while Chouhan was left out. But, on Saturday, in the presence of 20,000 BJP workers, Advani honoured Chouhan with a compliment that directly targeted Narendra Modi.
Speaking on the best and minus points of former prime ministers including Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Atal Behari Vajpayee; Advani said: "Vajpayee did not have any shortcomings and one of his best qualities was his humility. I see the same in Shivraj Singh Chouhan. He has changed the destiny of Madhya Pradesh with his developmental policies but is still as polite and soft-spoken. He never permitted arrogance to enter his mind."
Sources in the Madhya Pradesh BJP explained that Narendra Modi's arrogance and inaccessibility are perceived as his major flaws and Advani's comment on Chouhan's simplicity is a direct attack on Modi's profile as the party's next prime ministerial candidate. Advani
praised Chouhan's Ladli Laxmi Yojana, a scheme which financially benefits every girl child in Madhya Pradesh with Rs 1 Lakh on the day she turns 21 years of age. The scheme was introduced from April 2006 so that marriage expenses of girls could be met when one was ready to enter matrimony. "This scheme should be adopted by the Union government," he said. Advani also praised Chouhan's Teerth Darshan Yatra scheme for financially weak elderly couples who are taken on religious pilgrimage to holy cities on government expenditure. "The Teerth Darshan Yatra is for the elderly non tax-paying citizens who are taken on a religious pilgrimage. I remember the day the first train with such pilgrims went to Rameshwaram. Only Shivraj Singh Chouhan could have done this," Advani added.

NAXALS GRILLED SHUKLA'S DRIVER FOR HIS ANDHRA LINKS

New Delhi. Displaying remarkable presence of mind, veteran congress leader V C Shukla's driver, Bala, saved his life by speaking Telugu and claiming that Shukla was a businessman returning from Andhra Pradesh even as Naxalsmassacred a convoy of Congress leaders and workers. Narrating the sequence of events that ended in the carnage at Darbha, Bala said Shukla started a good half-an-hour after the cavalcade with other leaders left the Sukma rest house.
"As we neared Jheerum ghati and began climbing it, we heard gun shots from behind and realized someone was firing at our vehicle tyres. Vidya bhaiyya asked me to speed up but we were fired at on every curve," Bala said.
"Within minutes, we reached the cavalcade of vehicles of other leaders which was under heavy fire from all directions. With our SUV stuck
in the narrow space, Vidya bhaiyya asked his PSO to jump out of the car and escape. Instead, the PSO took position below the vehicle and began shooting," Bala said.
"VC asked us all to remain still and show no movement. We could see Naxals scanning each vehicle through binoculars from hill tops. But
the firing continued, a bullet grazed me and hit VC. He was hit by more bullets which pierced the SUV," Bala recounted.
He said that from his reclined driver's seat, he could see and hear the Maoists who checked every vehicle, yanked out survivors, took some into the jungle, shot some and asked others to run off.
"As they neared our vehicle, I jumped out and shouted in Telugu not to shoot us. I told them I didn't know Hindi, could only speak in Telugu and my 'Seth' and other elders were inside, he was a businessman returning from Andhra Pradesh. I pleaded they should spare us," Bala recalled.
Bala was marched off into the jungle where the extremists questioned him about his Andhra links. They instructed him to remain in the jungle while a team went back to the SUV, pulled out a dazed and bleeding Shukla and left him on the ground. Neither he nor other occupants of the car were attacked further while the PSO had already shot himself after he apparently apologized to Shukla for not being able to save him.
It was almost two hours later when the rescue team led by the district SP arrived that Bala informed him that Shukla lay bleeding in his car.
"The Naxals took away our mobiles. The SUV was in no position to move. The SP asked me to carry Shukla and other wounded in any vehicle of the convoy which could move so that he could be shifted to the ambulance stationed 2 km away. I then called Shukla's relative who is a doctor and Vaibhav Mishra in Raipur, his close aide. Later, I accompanied him to Raipur when he was airlifted," Bala said, adding he still could not believe he survived.

CONGRESS IN KARNATAKA LACK NUMBERS IN UPPER HOUSE TO PUSH BILLS

BANGALORE: With the legislature session starting from May 29, the first after Siddaramaiah became chief minister two weeks ago, the ruling Congress may have geared up to face the tough opposition parties like JD(S) and BJP, but chief minister  Siddaramaiah is expected to find it tough to push the bills as the ruling party doesn't enjoy the majority in the legislative council.
The government has planned to introduce many bills, including that of withdrawing the Karnataka Prevention of cow slaughter and Preservation (Amendment) Bill, 2012 passed in the state legislature during the BJP rule, but may not succeed in passing them as it faces number crunch.
The upper house in the state has a total trength of 75 members. The BJP has 40 members including chairman DH Shankaramurthy. Ruling Congress has 17 members while another opposition party JD(S) has 12-member strength. The house has 1 independent and 5 are vacant.
Going by the strength in the assembly, where it has 120 members, the Congress has to wait more than a year to get a majority on
the upper house. However, tradition is that though the opposition parties are in more numbers in Upper House, important bills like
finance, appropriation and others impacting everyday life of people are passed with out much opposition. But the BJP is sure to stall the reversal of Karnataka Prevention of cow slaughter and Preservation (Amendment) Bill, 2012.
Though the ruling-UPA doesn't have required numbers in the Rajya Sabha, the government takes help of allies for pushing the bills.

SMG CONVONIX LAUNCHES 'NO-TOUCH INTERACTIVE BANNER'S FOR SAMSUNG S4

Mumbai.Seeking to give consumers an opportunity to experience the technological marvels of the Galaxy S4 in real-time, SMG Convonix is launching an innovative Augmented Reality Motion Control Interactive Banner that will be available for Yahoo!users on May 24th and May 29th. Youtube users can experience the same on May 26th. This innovation in the digital space provides users an opportunity to experience and interact with two very innovative features of the Samsung Galaxy S4- the “Smart Pause” and “Air Gesture”.
The ‘Samsung Smart Pause’ in the Galaxy S4 enables users to control the screen by where you look. When you are watching a video, the video pauses when you look away then it starts right up again when you are back. ‘Air Gesture’ allows users to, for example, change the music track they are listening to with a wave of their hand. ‘Air View’ will preview photos and emails by hovering over the screen with you finger.
The technological capabilities of SMG Convonix made it possible replicate these features in a web browser and allows users to interact with
content on the banner by way of gestures with a webcam within the comforts of their home or workspace in real-time. Users will now have an opportunity to experience these two unique features of the Samsung Galaxy S4, digitally, without having to either click on their screen or physically going to any retail store. This is a unique innovation in interactive banners implemented in India which uses the web-cam for real-time simulation of technology features and it’s a banner you can interact with without a click.
Commenting on this innovation, Rahul Saigal, Chief Marketing Officer, Samsung India, stated, “At Samsung, we are committed to innovation. Even as our products like the Samsung Galaxy S4 exemplify this commitment , we are relying on digital innovation in the form of this Augmented Reality Motion Control Interactive Banner to bring alive the Galaxy S4 innovations for our consumers in the comfort of their workplace or home .”

ARTIST SUPPORTS WOMEN'S BETTER HEALTH&LOW COST INFERTILITY TREATEMENT

Demo was showed at the Socio-Medical Initiatives by ARTIST in Bangalore on Saturday on the eve of Mother’s Day.

Organizes Cutting Edge 2013 - Infertility Practice in India: Challenges & Opportunities on Mother’s Day eve
Bangalore. Asian Research & Training Institute for Skill Transfer (ARTIST), a premier institute for learning, today announced several socio-medical initiatives aimed at improving the overall healthcare service to women in addition to addressing the growing fertility-related problems among them.
ARTIST is an initiative of Dr. Hema Divakar, President, Federation of Obstetric & Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI), the apex body of obstetricians and gynaecologists in the country and Dr. Madhuri Patil of Dr. Patils Fertility& Endoscopy Clinic, Bangalore.
Speaking about the initiatives, ARTIST Chairperson, Dr. Hema Divakar, remarked, “Fertility issues have become a taboo as well as a stigma in the Indian society cutting across all sections. People, particularly women, undergo a great deal of stress, both physical and psychological because of societal and peer pressure. These initiatives are aimed at addressing such issues in the long term in order to improve the healthcare services delivery to such women. This will include empowering and educating the specialists in advanced techniques to create awareness and to offer low cost fertility treatment.”
According to proven studies, infertility is on the rise among Indian women because of various reasons, including changing lifestyle habits and
environmental factors. Based on the census reports of India from 1981 to 2001, 1991, research studies have revealed that infertility in India has increased by 50 per cent since the 80s. In addition, the incidences of infertility are increasing day-by-day, and they can be attributed to work pressures, stress, the way of living, sexually transmitted diseases, rapid urbanization, postponing of parenthood, and Obesity.
Though the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Programme of Action states that reproductive health services should include the prevention and offer appropriate treatment of infertility, the focus on infertility in India’s reproductive health programme across states is found to inadequate.
“Traditionally, infertile women in India experience social stigma and societal isolation. Infertility can threaten a woman’s identity in the family and society, status and economic security and consequently, be a major source of anxiety leading to lowered self-esteem and a sense of powerlessness. Couples seek varied traditional methods and religious practices, including visits to temples, abstaining from visiting a place where a woman has delivered a child, observing tantric rites, wearing charms, participating in rituals and visiting astrologers. We need
concerted efforts to address these and bring in scientific approach for successful outcomes,” Dr. Hema Divakar added.

MEDIA REPEATEDLY PROJECTS CONGRESS WIN,WE WILL SIT IN THE OPPOSITION -FORMER CM H.D.KUMARA SWAMY

Bangalore. Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda led JD(S), which had hoped to play the role of a kingmaker in Karnataka, said on Wednesday it would sit in the opposition.
"..if people have blessed us to sit in the opposition, we will sit in the opposition," JD(S) state president and Gowda's son H D Kumara Swamy  told reporters, as the results of the May 5 assembly polls came in.The JD(S) won two seats and was ahead in 39 others. Kumaraswamy,
whose party has not only retained its base intact but also eaten into the ruling BJP votes, but won 40 seats, said, " .. we will surely sit in the opposition and will safeguard the interests of people.""We will accept the defeat. The people have directed us to sit in the opposition," he said.Kumaraswamy angrily rejected suggestions that the JD(S) had an "internal understanding" with the BJP. "..where have we supported the BJP?...where we have entered into understanding with BJP?. "That's why I am telling it's the victory for media. Not Congress. Media only influenced the people", he said, showing annoyance with a section of media, for repeatedly projecting that the Congress would emerge victorious in the elections.

JDS WINS 40 SEATS,BJP 40 SEATS AND CONGRESS 121 SEATS IN ASSEMBLY RESULT

KJP 6 SEATS,BSR PARTY 4 SEATS AND OTHERS 12 SEATS IN 223SEATS.
Bangalore.
Congress on Wednesday made a spectacular come back in Karnataka wresting, power after seven years in its old southern fortress and in the process decimated the ruling BJP whose fate was sealed by a fractious split and corruption charges.

Battered by a series of scams at the national stage, Congress put up an impressive show in the assembly elections crossing the half-way mark of 113 seats in a house of 224 obviating the need for crutches and belying predictions.
The Congress has won 121 seats and was leading in three others, a gain of 41 seats over the elections five years ago, setting off a chief ministerial race into which Vokkaliga leader D.K.Shiva kumar, OBC leader Siddaramaiah and dalit leader and central minister Mallikarjuna Kharge threw their hat.

Hit by the exit of former chief minister BS Yadiyurappa  and the image of corruption during its tenure in the first government in the south, the BJP has won 40 seats and was leading in three more. It had had won 110 seats five years ago.
Similarly, the JD(S), which had 28 seats in the 2008 elections, has won 40 seats and was ahead in three more. The BJP and JD(S) are locked in a neck-and-neck race for the main opposition status.
The Yeddyurappa-led Karnataka Janata Paksha (KJP), which ended as a spoiler for BJP, could not do much for itself as it bagged only six seats,BSR party only 4 seats and others 12 seats.

The BSR-Congress, led by former BJP minister Sriramulu, considered close to the Bellary brothers, also chipped away BJP votes and ended up with four seats.CP Yogeeshwara, who quit the Jagadish Shettar ministry, towards the end of the tenure of the government and contested onSamajvad Party ticket, won from Channapata, defeating Anitha Kumaraswamy (JDS), wife of JDS state unit presidentHD Kumara Swamy by nearly 6,500 votes.
12 ministers fall
As the Congress juggernaut rolled on in Karnataka, 12 Ministers of the Jagadish Shettar cabinet, including deputy chief minister KS Eshwarappa, fell by the wayside, rubbing salt into the wounds of the vanquished BJP. Eshwarappa's loss in Shimoga is all the more significant as he was a former state unit president of the party and also held the key portfolios of rural development and panchayat raj and
revenue.
Eshwarappa lost by about 5,000 votes, and was behind his Congress and KJP  (Karnataka Janatha Paksha of former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa) opponents. Eshwarappa was in the "hit-list" of Yeddyurappa who now had the "sweet revenge". Another big gun to lose was
industries minister Murugesh R Nirani, who had spearheaded two global investors meet, and was in two minds till the last minute whether to join forces with KJP but eventually continued to be in BJP, in Bilgi.

He lost by 11,000 to Congress' JT Patil in the constituency, where KJP had not fielded any candidate. Other Ministers who lost included V Somanna (Vijayanagar), BN Bache Gowda (Hoskote), Revunaik Belamagi (Gulbarga Rural), A Narayanaswamy (Anekal), Sogadu
Shivanna (Tumkur), SK Bellubbi (Basavana Bagewadi), Kalakappa Bandi (Ron), SA Ravindranatha (Davangere North), SA Ramadass (Krishnaraja) and Anand Asnotikar (Karwar). Congress was not without "significant casualties".

In a shock defeat, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president G Parameshwara, also a chief ministerial candidate, lost in Koratagere in Tumkur district to JD(S) opponent, PR Sudhakara Lal, by more than 18,000. Congress candidate and former Union Civil Aviation Minister C M Ibrahim was pushed to third position in Bhadrawati.Meanwhile, infrastructure-entrepreneur of Bangalore Mysore Infrastructure Project Ashok Kheny, the Karnataka Makkala Paksha candidate, won from Bidar South, defeating sitting JD(S) MLA Bandeppa Kashempur by more than 3,000 votes

September 2012 with its all new Yamaha RAY. The RAY which targets a niche customer base of young, urban women, has been designed and engineered to answer the needs of this growing class of young female customers who want a scooter that is stylishly designed, compact, easy to use and have a fresh new appeal. The company has developed & launched the Yamaha Female Riding Training Program for female customers who have a concern to ride a scooter or want to

The company plans to conduct the YFRT programme in various cities across India for women who feel the need to be trained on riding a 2-wheeler. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Jun Nakata, Director, Yamaha Motor India Sales Pvt. South India in this regard has paved way for young girls in colleges and working professionals warming up to the idea of owning a scooter. Therefore, the best way to encourage them is by providing them quality training with strong and stable instructors. This training will therefore meet the need for a riding school for girls in India. Yamaha supports these young riders through “Yamaha Female Riding Training – YFRT” to be safe riders and less prone to accidents. YFRT is also a good platform to explain the features & benefits of our scooter Ray that we launched in September last year, the response for which has been very encouraging.”
“South India overall is a lucrative market for two-wheelers with considerable number of young girls and women taking to the wheels. The previous sessions of YFRT in Bangalore were well received; therefore we were prompted to bring yet another edition of YFRT to this city in this College.” Mr. Nakata further added.

KARNATAKA DONS CASTE POLITICS

Picture
Bangalore. The importance of caste as an influence on voting behaviour and comes up with some surprising findings about voter attitudes in Karnataka.
The tie is caste. For all its tech-savvy and progressivism, Karnataka still remains extremely caste-conscious when it comes to the ballot box.

According to the survey of 10,772 voters across the state, 41% of respondents believe caste is very important in deciding who to vote for. The candidate comes a poor second: around 20% of prospective voters cite that the person they are voting for matters most.

The survey found Dharwad, Gadag, Chitradurga and Haveri districts much more caste-conscious than the coastal or Hyderabad-Karnatak regions. Fully, 97% of the survey's respondents from Dharwad pronounce caste as the most important factor when it comes to choosing a candidate. Nearly 88% of respondents from Gadag, 76% from
Chitradurga and 70% from Haveri are caste-conscious. On the other side of the spectrum, Udupi, Kodagu and Dakshina Kannada districts show fewer than 1% of respondents believing caste is important.
When asked about the range of
opinions uncovered by the poll, political analyst and Survy explains: "Normally, if the values are 0% or more than 90%, it's a bit surprising. However, there is indeed a higher level of caste consciousness in Dharwad, Gadag and Chitradurga districts, the stronghold of the Lingayats. There is always a strong caste-based mobilization in these districts. As far as Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kodagu are concerned... the caste factor in polls is indeed less."
The survey also shows increased caste-based voting among older voters. Half the respondents over the age of 61 say caste matters to them. Unsurprisingly, younger voters are more progressive; 46% of voters below the age of 45 gave minimal importance to caste.

The real shocker is that the highest educated demographic also shows the most caste sensitivity; 47% of respondents with postgraduate education say they are influenced by caste. On the other hand, only 39% of uneducated voters say caste matters to them.

"It is not surprising," says R Indira, a sociologist at Mysore University. "A person's first identity factor is caste. It was believed that the influence of caste would diminish with education. But education does not necessarily mean a change of heart. Now caste polarization is
taking place in new ways. Up till the 1980s, people felt embarrassed to openly speak about caste. Now, it is being discussed in the open. The proliferation of caste- and subcaste-based organizations and the increase in the number of caste-based mutts have played a major role in making people aware of caste."

Nearly 43% of rural voters are likely to vote by caste, as opposed to 38% of urban voters. Men seem more caste-conscious, with 43% rating
caste highly, as against 37% of women.
In terms of income, the segment with annual incomes between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 10 lakh are the most likely to vote on the basis of caste. Those with incomes between Rs 25,000 and Rs 50,000 are the least likely to take caste into consideration when voting.

Political parties are all too aware of this. Caste calculus underlies seat allocation and candidate selection. The dominant Lingayat and Vokkaliga communities have the lion's share of party tickets. Lingayat strongman BSY has allocated 71 tickets to fellow Lingayats. Close behind is the
BJP which has given 60 tickets to Lingayats. The JD(S) plays for the Vokkaliga vote, with 56 tickets allocated to the community.
The
Congress targets the backwards communities, with 48 tickets given to members of the backward castes. Clearly, caste makes political sense.

Why governance is just another word in India

New Delhi. There has been much talk lately of governance. Ever since Narendra Modi put it at the top of his political agenda, other political leaders have picked up on it and us political pundit types have taken to pondering over the word almost as if it were the first time we had heard it. Unfortunately, the word governance remains meaningless to most people until it comes accompanied by specific illustrations that give muscle and sinew to what is otherwise an abstract idea. For me, the manner in which American officials dealt with the aftermath of the bombings in Boston last week provided an excellent example of what happens in countries where there is good governance. But, first a word about leadership in these times when India seems so bereft of it.

As soon as the explosions occurred, the President of the United States went on nationwide television to reassure people that he felt their pain and that the perpetrators would be hunted down and punished wherever they were.
Why does this never happen in India? Why do our leaders vanish as soon as something terrible happens? When did you last hear one of them say a reassuring word after something bad happened? These are questions we must ask ourselves just as we must ask ourselves why as the world's largest democratic country we have not been able to put in place the sort of systems that went into immediate action after the cowardly, senseless bombings in Boston.

As someone whose job requires me to check what the news is on the hour every hour, I had my television on when the explosions occurred. Within minutes, I saw policemen appear to cordon off the crime site and paramedics appear to help the victims. What I also saw were ordinary citizens rushing to help the wounded and it reminded me of the most poignant comment I heard from a man who spent more than 24 terrified hours hiding in his room in the Taj Hotel
on 26/11. He said, 'When I finally came out, there was nobody there to help me get home. Nobody to even offer me a cup of tea or words of comfort.' And Mumbai is a city in which in times of peace you can bring swarms of high-minded
activists into the streets in minutes.

To return though to the bombings in Boston and what we need to learn from them, did you notice that although the American President came on television several times to reassure people, he did not instantly blame jihadists as our ministers like to do? Some have blamed Pakistan even before an investigation has begun. In complete contrast, the White House spokesman answered repeated questions about possible suspects simply by saying that the investigation was still ongoing and he did not want to prejudice it in any way.Why does this never happen in India? Why did we have senior Congress leaders openly blame the RSS for 26/11 without once thinking of the consequences of what they said?

Speaking of 26/11, we need to remember that if the Americans had not helped us with the technology needed to intercept the conversations that the killers in Mumbai had with their masters in Pakistan, we may never have known who did it. And, if a brave policeman had not given his life to catch Ajmal Kasab alive, we may never have proved conclusively that the perpetrators of the worst act of terrorism on Indian soil were Pakistanis.

So have things changed since then? Have we learned any lessons? No, we have not. We know that jihadi terrorism is war by another name and its objective is to destroy India, but we have not yet acknowledged that if ordinarypolicemen across the country are not trained in counterterrorism, we will never win the war. We have mulled over synchronised intelligence gathering through a National Intelligence Grid, but not gone further. In the streets of Mumbai, I sometimes see men with 'Commando' written on their shirts, and ominous-looking armoured cars, but has this made us any safer? No, it has not. And the reason is that security systems remain broken and antiquated and nobody has bothered to do anything to improve them.

The reason why nobody has bothered is because that most fundamental thing that is required for anything to work as it should has not yet been fully understood by those we elect. Governance. Not a single political party has given to governance the sort of passionate attention that they routinely give to raging about secularism and communalism. Or even to the time that most political parties are now allotting to the specific task of proving, before 2014, that Modi has not done for Gujarat what he claims to have done. Modi himself needs to do more to explain what 'su-shasan' means.

Is Karnataka heading towards another round of hodge-podge ?

RACE WITHIN PARTIES
Bangalore.
With battle lines having clearly been drawn now, the state appears to be set for yet another round of no bars hold campaign and in Karnataka. Politicians of all ilk would trying all tricks under the book to impress and influence the voters. But the most comical kinds of scenes are witnessed in the Congress camp which has more than five aspirants for the Chief Minister’s post and which seems to be besotted more with internal alignment problems than otherwise.

The BJP on the other hand, has been careful in not tom-toming its strength and achievements because it is clearly on the defensive and it has been finding difficult to get credible and winnable candidates in a few crucial segments.
There is a clear HN Ananth Kumar impact on the selection of BJP candidates which seems to be  more assured and confident about performing in Northern karnataka region than other areas.
JD(S) has always been strong in the cauveri delta and it would make that as the cornerstone of its political campaign. The  Deve Gowda family has been hoping for a better harvest this time around because the Congress does not have
any tall leader to counter him in the Old Mysore region and JDS) is likely to take away a lion share in the 90 odd seats of Old Mysore region.

KJP is a dark horse and is treading into the poll-path for the first time and it is hell-bent on spoiling the applecart of both national parties. Yeddiurappa was waiting for a windfall in the shape of many BJP ministers into his kitty. That didn’t happen and now he has to make all sound and noise to keep him relevant in Karnataka political arena as another alternative.

One thing however, appears to be quite clear. The four cornered fight at almost all 224 places and the sprinking of a large number of rebels and independents indicate that the margin of victory could even be upto 100 votes.

The Congress party does not seem to have followed the traditional wisdom of caste and community combination in giving tickets to most of its candidates. In karnataka, caste has always played a major role than issues like corruption and bad governance and the would continue to play a decisive role in deciding the fate of many party candidates..The Congress party continues to remain a divided house and leaders of rival factions would try their best to damage the party from within till the end.
The Congress party launched it campaign on 13th April at Malleshwaram grounds in Bangalore. But SM Krishna did not turn up. In 2008, the Congress had won only 9 out of the total of 28 seats.  With the present list of candidates, it would not be in a position to reach double digit. In Old Mysore region, the Congress party has given tickets to most of those candidates who would  fail in front of JD(S) and with both Vokkaliga leaders, SM Krishna planning to go abroad during elections  and DK Shivkumar having been tied in kanakapura against PGR Sindhia , it would be a virtual cake walk
for JD(S) in most of the cases.
In central Karnataka, the party may have to pay for the insult and humiliation meted out to Davangere Strongman Shamnur Shivshankarappa and his son SS Mallikarjuna whose name was announced for segment no 106 at the last moment. Now, his close aides are saying that Shamnur would keep himself confined to his own constituency and do nothing beyond as he does not forget any insult or injury. That Shivshankarappa has been at logger heads with the KPCC President is well known and he makes a big difference on at least 15 to 17 seats in Davangere and adjoining areas together.
The same approach is likely to be maintained by both Dharam Singh and Mallikarjun Kharge who would keep themselves confined to their son’s constituency. Both of them had to wait till the end to get their sons nomination cleared.

The Bombay karnataka region which accounts for 96 odd seats, the BJP still remains strong because of Jagdish Shettar’s own image and he has managed to keep most of Yediurappa’s close confidants in his own fold.  Despite, all the fracas, the BJP is expected to do well in this area and even a few rallies by Narendra Modi is expected to swing votes in BJP’s favour by at least 5 to 8 percent. Modi’s men have already mapped the specific areas for his campaign and he is likely to be in karnataka at the end of April to boost the image of the sagging party.
KJP, on the other hand, is expected to do well in Malnaad area but it would certainly do bigger damage to BJP’s prospects than what Bangarappa had done to Congress in 1994. Lingayat voters still get attracted to Yeddiurappa and that is going to spoil the applecart of both Congress and BJP in at least 6 to 8 districts in unexpected ways.

The Congress would have made a huge dent in the coastal area this time. But the wrong selection of candidates because of rigidity and “social engineering”game of Oscar Fernandes, Veerappa Moily and Janardhan Poojari would again be the culprit. In Mangalore, the Congress may win at the most 3 to 4 seats out of 8 and almost the same tally would remain in Udipi as well. The Congress is not going to do well in Karwar either.
As of now, the poll  results of 2013 Assembly polls appear to be going 2004 Assembly polls  way where the BJP got 79 seats while the Congress could get only 64 seats and JD(S) tally was 58 seats. KJP may not win even 20 seats
but it would damage  BJP on at least 65 to 70 seats while the JD(S) would definitely improve its present tally of 28 to up to 40-45 seats. The BJP would somehow manage to remain in the range of 60 to 65 seats. That means, the
Congress party would find it difficult to even match the tally of 80 seats that it won in 2008 when Mallikarjun Kharge was the KPCC President.
This time around, the situation could prove to be quite difficult for both KPCC President as well as CLP leader. Its clear that the Congress party high command has decided to go into various motions and put up a  facade of sincerity  and seriousness and with regard to karnataka and at the same time , leaving enough room for internal sabotage and mischief. If the party wins the elections, then it would be seen as the result of collective strength and experience of all those involved. If it loses, then the whole blame would be put on the heads of Falerio and Mistry.
The ground reports from Mysore and Tumkur paint an entirely different picture and  questions are already raised if Karnataka too would go Gujarat way with regard to the winnability of PCC President as well as the CLP leader. In Gujarat, both PCC President Arjun Modwadia and CLP leader Shakti Sinh Gohil had to bite dust even as the Congress party faied a wee bit better than 2007 assembly polls in terms of numbers.

The winnability of KPCC President  has become all the more difficult because the   JD(S) has fielded a formidable candidate in Mr Sudhakar Lal– a banjara and member of zp thrice. Incidentally, Lal happens to be the brother in
law of Mr Shivmurthy Nayak who is a member of election committee of KPCC. Mr Nayak contested 2008 elections on bjp ticket and lost.. Surprisingly, he was brought in as general secretary of KPCC& now a member of the election
committee.
Mr Lal enjoys the support of Nayak community in the constituency of Pavagada wherein Dr Parameshwar is the siting MLA. Besides, he also enjoys the confidence of Lingayat community.. Moreover, the kunchatiga Vokkaliga community is following Mr chennigappa of( JDS) who earlier represente  this constituency and now will be contesting from Tumkur rural assembly segment.
On the other hand, CLP leader Sidharamaih represents Varuna segment where the JD(S) has already announced the names of a retired ACP,Mr Cheluvaraju as their candidate and he belongs to powerful Nayaka community which commands nearly 30% of votes in the  constituency. Moreover, Mr GT Devegowda who has returned to JD(S) from BJP, has a significant following in this constituency.   Mr Siddalinga Swamy, a right hand man of Yeddiyurappa, is the candidate from KJP and he will give a run for money to Siddaramaih.
Looking at the present state of affairs in Karnataka, it is quite obvious that the congress party already seems to have proceeded on the path of Harakiri and seems to have yielded the space to JD(S), BJP and KJP at respective regions
even without pondering over the long-term consequences..
At the end, the Congress party may find itself in another embarrassing situation by failing to grab the opportunity which was offered on a platter in Karnataka, thanks to last 5 years of BJP misrule. It would be yet another case of ‘nearest
to the Church and yet farthest from God”.

A support Group for throat cancer patients who have lost their voice box after surgery
Assists members in total rehabilitation and help them regain confidence

Bangalore.BGS Global Hospitals launched “Global India Lary Club”, a support group for throat cancer patients who have lost their voice box after surgery on the occasion of World Voice Day. A corporate responsibility initiative of BGS Global Hospitals, this has been formed in association with International Association of Laryngectomees and Voice of Tobacco Victims (VoTV). It aims to assist the members in their efforts towards the total rehabilitation of the laryngectomee patients, help them regain confidence, empower them to carry forward the social responsibility to create awareness about ill effects of tobacco. It will provide a forum for patients to interact with the Doctors, speech therapists, psychologists and each other and learn the best way to cope with their speech related problems.

The Global India Lary Club was inaugurated by Sri AM Prasad
ADGP (Crime). Sri A M Prasad said, “A large number of these patients developed throat cancer owing to the use of tobacco. The Karnataka Police Department has taken serious steps to curb smoking in public places. A number of children fall prey to this habit. The police have taken steps to clear shops within 100 yards of schools that sell these products. We are committed to creating a tobacco free Karnataka.”

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. K. Ravindranath, Chairman and Managing Director, Global Hospitals Group said that this unique initiative is indeed a way to give voice for the voiceless and comes as a boon for those patients who suffer voice box cancers. It is our vision to spread the benefits of the forum to victims of Laryngectomy residing in small towns and villages across the State.

Dr Vishal Rao, Consultant, Head and Neck Onco Surgeon said, “The theme for World Voice Day 2013, "Connect to your voice," reminds us that our voice is essential for any number of basic activities that might be done on a given day - speaking with family or colleagues, placing an order in a restaurant, or just saying hello to a friend, etc. Your Voice Counts! However this may not be the same for patients of voice box cancers. These patients have lost their voice box to throat cancer. Surgery performed to treat the cancer required removal of the voice box. While normal people speak through their voice box, these patients speak through a unique way i.e through their food pipe artificially through prosthesis. Tracheo oesophageal prosthesis insertion is a simple day care procedure that could be performed to help patients live a life with communication.”

Mohan Raj,a Retd Wing Commander and receiver of president’s gallantry award has taken a lead in addressing throat cancers patients in various forum instilling hope in them .Presentation and interaction included topics such as new techniques and innovations in the field, latest products including swimming aids and on how to improve the voice in the long term. The International Association of Laryngectomees will provide online support interface as required.

Case: Shivalingiah is now able to speak fluently
Shivalingiah aged 60 years worked in power mills factory as a labourer. He underwent surgical removal of his voice box for stage 4 throat cancer and he lost his voice. At that time he felt he would never be able to speak ever again. Life was never the same for him, without communication. While he had heard about the option of voice rehabilitation, he was not convinced about the same and had little confidence in the procedure. He continued to live life in this way without speech for a period of 3 years. He then learnt about another laryngectomy patient who was able to speak after the procedure and lead a socially active life. This motivated him to undergo the procedure on 21st March at BGS Global Hospitals. He started speaking within half hour after the procedure. He now speaks fluently.

NARENDRA MODI ACCUSES UPA GOVT WORK

RAJSAMAND (RAJASTHAN): BJP chief Rajnath Singh today accused the Congress of misusing CBI as a tool to remain in power and said the days of UPA government were numbered.

"Congress led UPA government is a weak government and may go anytime. It is in minority but continues to remain in
power due to the misuse of the CBI. "The government must go because it is not acting in the interest of healthy democracy," Singh said during the launch of BJP state chief Vasundhara Raje's 'Suraj Sankalp Yatra' here.

"The government is making retired Director of the CBI a governor and proposing to make a former NIA officer chairman of NHRC," he said. Singh said "as Ram killed Ravana, corruption will destroy the Congress."

"Congress has lost confidence among masses and does not have a leadership. The party will not return to power both at the Centre and Rajasthan," he said. Singh held the Congress responsible for skyrocketing
inflation and said that it all happened due to wrong economic policies and faulty planning of the UPA government.
"It was the
NDAgovernment led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee that fought against corruption and took the nation forward at
the international level by conducting nuclear tests," he said.
The BJP president claimed that his party has given best governments including in states, which, he said has been acknowledged by national and international survey agencies.

About the projection of Raje as the chief ministerial candidate for the state assembly elections due later this year, he said it was an open fact that her five-year rule was excellent as compared to the Congress. He flagged off the 'Suraj Sankalp Yatra' after the meeting.
When Singh began his address, party workers shouted slogans in support of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

annaoucement of Karnataka POOLS MAKES Palititcal party to target at rural and urban youth votes

New Delhi. The announcement of the Karnataka election has claimed an unsuspecting collateral victim — publicity campaign targeted at the rural, urban youth.

The campaign intended to address "urban alienation and negativity'' in the aftermath of theDecember 16 Nirbhaya gang-rape case, when students hit the streets to lead anti-government protests across the country, has had to be shelved for now. Due to be launched in February, the delayed publicity blitz was being fine tuned when the poll
announcement was made. It has now been pushed back by a few months, and will unroll only after the Karnataka elections is over in May.
The theme of the campaign is expected to address middle-class aspirations and focus on higher education through opportunities like new IIMs and IITs, improved lifestyles in metros, flyovers and improved modes of transportation, access to mobile telephony.
The campaign has been devised in the wake of the government's assessment that a focus on scams and civil society activism has distracted public opinion from tangible improvements in national life. It has bred a sense of gloomy pessimism where the government's initiatives and successes fail to register on the minds of people.

The uplifting nature of the publicity effort, the government hopes, will dispel some of the negativism, particularly among youth voters with fickle political loyalties, high expectations and who are impatient about change.
The campaign looks at how amenities have transformed lives of people whether it is booking rail tickets or running small businesses. Spearheaded by the I&B ministry, it includes print, TV and radio jingles and will also look at themes of communal harmony and social cohesiveness that Congress-ruled Centre has stressed on.

"We are focusing on the positive developments under the current administration for the last nine years as against a perception of negativity and gloom. People have been empowered in various ways with new infrastructure being created in cities across the country and increased opportunities for the urban youth," a source
said.
The last publicity ampaign was targeted at the rural youth and concentrated on UPA's policies including rural employment opportunities like MGNREGS, medical and educational opportunities through Janani Surakhsha Yojana and Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, pension schemes and rural housing with the tag line of "sabka hit, sabka haq." The tag line is expected to remain the same, but extended to an urban and rural youth.

Sonia Gandhi remains a pre-eminent, troubling politician

Tryst with dynasty
New Delhi.“MADAM”, say sycophants in the ruling Congress party, “has taken politics in India to a new plane.” They gush over Sonia Gandhi, who is marking a record 15 years as party chief. Stern but motherly, she is India’s most powerful figure. Manmohan Singh may be prime minister, but she has more clout: overseeing the ruling coalition and the make-up of cabinets, and influencing policy. And she is preparing her son, Rahul Gandhi, for high office, though his only qualification is his name. The most popular metaphor to describe her meaning for Indian politics is “glue”. Stickiness matters: India’s only truly national party risks crumbling into several regional ones. Divisions threaten the ruling coalition that it heads. Its largest partner, led by a Bengali, Mamata Banerjee, quit in September over a few modest and much-needed economic reforms. On March 19th the next biggest stormed out. The southern Tamil DMK called for protests against Sri Lanka’s abuse of its fellow ethnic Tamils.

Serial sulkers, they could yet return. The finance minister, Palaniappan Chidambaram, said India would be tough on Sri Lanka in a vote this week in the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. He knows the coalition is vulnerable without the DMK, with just 230 MPs, less than half the total of 543.Two parties from Uttar Pradesh prop up the government from outside, so an election before 2014 remains unlikely. But they will not back the painful economic and tax changes needed to fix a fiscal mess.Whatever happens, for the next year Mrs Gandhi will oversee more politicking than effective rule. No change there, then. At least she is said now to relish politics. When she arrived in India she reportedly even shunned reading newspapers. Her main handicap, Italian roots, is rarely mentioned. Even this month, as India and Italy trade bitter exchanges, her loyalty is not questioned. Bilateral ties are strained after the Supreme Court told Italy’s
ambassador he had lost his diplomatic immunity, and airports were told to stop him leaving. He had broken a promise to return two marines accused of killing Indian fishermen. Mrs Gandhi this week heaped criticism on the country of her
birth.
Her ability to hold together a coalition remains the main strength of Congress. As a secular party with a history of ruling, it has advantages. Under her, Congress readily strikes deals with local parties, such as the DMK, keeping itself weak in state elections in return for support nationally. Darker arts are employed too. Her main fixer, a Gujarati with dyed
black hair, Ahmed Patel, is said to flit after midnight along New Delhi’s leafy avenues into the bungalows of the powerful, striking political deal
State leaders wheel and deal for central public funds. Take Bihar’s chief minister, Nitish Kumar. An ally of the opposition, at times he is mentioned as an outside prime-ministerial hope. After a big rally in Delhi on March 17th, he visited the leaders of Congress, dropping hints he could switch camp. His price? “Backward” status for Bihar to ensure more cash from the centre.
How much longer Madam, who is 66, will stay to oversee these machinations is unclear, but she is eyeing the door. Two years ago a serious illness, rumoured to be cervical cancer, required a month’s secret treatment in New York. She seems fully recovered, appearing energetic at a rally in Nagaland last month. But no one beyond the immediate family has much idea. A mostly deferential press rarely asks tricky questions. An eminent journalist hints at why, describing how a Congress figure once tried to buy him off with a thick bundle of rupees placed in his car. He returned the cash; others presumably do not.
Mrs Gandhi refuses interviews and speaks rarely in parliament or at press conferences. In other mature democracies such snooty indifference would anger the public. A supportive biographer says India is different: demanding
responses from leaders is a “Western-minded concern”. Ordinary rural folk expect “silent” communication, he says. Mrs Gandhi need merely show herself as “well meaning”. Yet if such a feudal attitude persists beyond her flunkeys, it is
among a shrinking number of the ageing, poor and deferential. For most, Congress should quickly dump the condescension. In recent elections, notably in 2009, the party has relied on urban votes as well as rural ones. The younger, better educated and middle-class are a rising share of the electorate. To them, Mrs Gandhi and others look increasingly out of touch.
A senior party figure last year lamented that the country needs 80m productive, skilled jobs. Rather than think how these might be created, Mrs Gandhi, tutored in politics and policy by Indira Gandhi, believes in huge spending on dole for villagers, a “right” to food dished up by government and other welfare. Only too late, at the end of 2012, did she grasp that subsidy cuts, limits on public spending and encouragement of investors are essential to restore economic strength. Growth of GDP has dipped to 4.5%. For many, that feels like recession. An embittered author and ex-friend of Mrs Gandhi says that, on economic policy, she “cannot think of anyone who has done more damage to the country”.

The road to office, paved with good intentions.Others are more sympathetic. But on many subjects Mrs Gandhi
disappoints. She should offer stronger leadership after a rush of horrible cases of violent rape, murder and other abuse of women. On tackling endemic corruption, which requires new ways of financing parties, she is silent. She has even failed to distance herself from her businessman son-in-law, Robert Vadra, who did unusually well from property deals in
Haryana.
The most dispiriting legacy, however, is in the nature of her succession. Her son is equally well meaning. He has long talked of promoting meritocracy, ending dynastic privilege and making Congress the first party to have internal democracy. Yet in January, contradicting all that, he accepted the crown of party “vice-president”, without the bother of an election. India now braces for a new stage in its dynastic history. Expect it to be familiar.

Udupi MLA Raghupathi Bhat caught in sex scandal: Opts out of
  election arena

Udupi. Sitting MLA of Udupi Raghupathi Bhat has opted out of the poll arena, in the wake of the circulation of a sex CD which showed him in a sex act with an unidentified woman
It has been reliably learnt that Bhat who felt greatly humiliated over the circulation of the sex CD, has informed some TV channels which contacted him to know his response, that he would not be contesting elections this time.
Bhat is learnt to have said that the CD was circulated just with an intention to tarnish his  image and  that he was not the person in the CD.  It has been learnt that the CD which reached several TV channels and media houses has explicit sex scenes which  seem to be an act of mutual consent.

“ I am hurt, humiliated, surprised as well as shocked,” Bhat has reacted to the CD which, he says he saw just last night. He said this was nothing but character assassination and strongly suspects the hands of his political adversaries. He has also demanded a high level probe into the case and promised he will return to politics only after he comes out clear once the investigation is over. There have been reports earlier that some RSS leaders were strongly against Bhat’s candidature as they suspected that Bhat’s candidature would certainly give a tool in the hands of the opposition parties to rake up the  allegation of Bhat’s involvement in  his wife, Padmapriya’s suspicious death case.

Meanwhile, the circulation of the CD at a time when assembly elections are just round the corner,  has also given room for much suspicion. There are reports that the BJP was planning to field either the son of late Dr VS Acharya or his wife from Udupi.

Karnataka’s rebel minister Renukacharya sacked

Bangalore. Karnataka’s rebel minister M.P Renukacharya was Wednesday sacked from the ministry following his expulsion from the ruling BJP late Tuesday for six years on disciplinary grounds.

A Raj Bhavan communiqué said state governor H.R. Bhardwaj had accepted the recommendation of chief minister Jagadish Shettar to drop excise minister Renukacharya from the council of ministers. The rebel lawmaker from Honnali assembly segment in Davangere district, about 310km from city, Tuesday embarrassed the ruling party by  accusing its former chief minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda of receiving money from him and being corrupt.Though Renukacharya had threatened to soon quit the faction-ridden Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to join the Karnataka Janata Party(KJP) of former BJP’s chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, ruling party’s state unit president Pralhad Joshi expelled him from the primary membership after Gowda and Shettar sought swift action against him for indulging in loose talk and making false charges.
Renukacharya told local news channels at Honnali that Gowda had taken huge sum of money from him during the Udupi-Chickmagalur parliamentary by-election in March 2012, which the BJP forfeited to the Congress.
Gowda, who represented the Lok Sabha constituency, resigned after he became the ruling party’s second chief minister in the state in August 2011 and got elected to the state legislative council last year.

The controversial member, however, did not quantify the amount of money he had given to Gowda but claimed that he had documentary evidence to prove the charge. He also accused BJP’s national general secretary Ananth Kumar,
party’s former state unit president K.S. Eshwarappa and Joshi of being equally corrupt. As Yeddyurappa’s die-hard loyalist, Renukacharya has been smarting over the weeks after the party denied tickets to his nominees in the
March 7 local body elections in his assembly constituency where the BJP fared well.
Apprehending that he would not be given party ticket to contest in the ensuing state legislative assembly election May 5, Renukacharya said he would join Yeddyurappa by this weekend and fight against the BJP from his home
constituency on KJP ticket.Renukacharya also accused a prominent state RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) leader of minting money after the BJP came to power in Karnataka for the first time in May 2008.
Gowda, however, rubbished Renukacharya’s claims and told reporters in Bangalore “everybodyknows Renukacharya’s character”.
Gowda also recalled that he had ordered a probe into allegations that Renukacharya was involved in corruption in the excise ministry during his tenure as chief minister.Gowda, however, resigned from the chief minister post in July
2012 following revolt by Yeddyurappa’s loyalists and supporters.

BASEL-3 NORMS FOR INDIAN BANKS FROM APRIL 1

Mumbai. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will soon issue a notification for the implementation of the Basel-3 capital
regulations by Indian banks from April 1, central bank governor D. Subba Rao said Friday.
“We are going to issue a notification next week for banks to implement the Basel-3 regulations from April 1, on the basis of the guidelines issued last year,” Rao said at a Bankers’ Club meeting here.Though the Basel III norms, as an international accounting standard for banks, were to come into force since January 1, the central bank re-scheduled them to April 1, giving Indian banks four months to improve their capital adequacy in conformity with the new norms.

“Banks will require high level of capital as credit will become more expensive. The credit-GDP (gross domestic product) ratio has to go up for accelerating the economic growth,” Rao told about 500 bankers of state-run banks.
In accordance with Basel-3 norms, Indian banks will have to maintain their capital adequacy ratio (CAR) at nine percent as against the minimum recommended requirement of eight percent.

Under Basel-3 accord, banks have to maintain Tier-one capital (equity and reserves) at seven percent of risk weighted assets (RWA) and a capital conservation bugger of 2.5 percent of RWA.

Basel norms are a set of international banking regulations formulated by the Basel committee on bank supervision, which set out the minimum capital requirements to sustain banks the world over. The committee operates from Basel in Switzerland.
According to the recent RBI financial stability report, Indian banks will require an additional capital of Rs.5 trillion to comply with Basel-3 norms, including Rs.3.25 trillion as non-equity capital and Rs.1.75 trillion in the form of equity capital over the next five years.
“Though much of the growth over the last decade had come from the services sector, contributing about 60 percent to the GDP, the manufacturing sector needs higher growth to increase its contribution to the GDP from 24 percent presently,” Rao observed, while highlighting the challenge of risk management faced by the Indian banking sector.

BGS GLOBAL HOSPITALS LAUNCH WORLD HEAD INJURY AWARENESS DAY

Picture
Every citizen responsible to save his head - Awareness can help BGS Global Hospitals and Bangalore City Traffic Police launch World Head Injury Awareness Day Campaign
Increase in number of injuries attributes to 105000 deaths in the country.
Major deaths and disabilities occur due to secondary brain damage which is preventable.
Appropriate action in the golden hour reduces death and disability

  Bangalore.
BGS Global Hospitals in association with Bangalore City Traffic Police launched a Campaign for creating awareness about Head Injury to commemorate ‘World Head Injury Awareness Day’ which falls on 20th March 2013.
Learning to recognize a serious head injury and giving basic first aid can save someone's life. This campaign aims at creating awareness and sensitize citizens of the city about head injuries. Educational leaflets on first aid measures, do’s
and don’ts, etc would be distributed to the public at major traffic signals on 20th March 2013 as part of this campaign.

A training program and demonstration on providing first aid and rescue of people with head injuries was organised by BGS Global Hospitals. Trained doctors from the hospital used videos, practice demos, presentations; etc to impart these skills. Case scenarios were discussed and critical scenarios simulated to practice and acquire life saving skills hands on, using manikins and models so that they can help increase chances of survival and hence save many lives. The training session which followed the inauguration was attended by over 100 traffic police personnel. First aid kits for traffic Police jeeps were given by the Hospital to Dr. Saleem.

Dr. M. A Saleem, Additional Commissioner of Police-Traffic, Bangalore City at the Traffic Training Institute
said, “It is indeed heartening to note that BGS Global Hospitals has taken up this campaign to prevent head injuries and save precious life. Campaigns like this may help in creating awareness about the need to drive safely and
wear protective gears like helmets and seat belts.”

Dr. N. K. Venkataramana, Chief Neurosurgeon and Vice-Chairman, BGS Global Hospitals said, “In the recent years, incidence of head injuries has increased due to Road Traffic Accidents as well as other causes like violence, militancy and falls. As per WHO statistics, the highest number of deaths due to road traffic accidents is happening in India. There has been a serious brain drain resulting from the injuries leading to loss of lives and disability. Since it is a preventable problem, it is the responsibility of every citizen to save their own head and create a safe country.”

“Increase in the number of injuries world over attributes to 1.2 million deaths and 5 million permanently disabled. Last
year 1,05,000 people lost their valuable lives in the country. It has been predicted that by 2020 the injuries are going to be a major public health problem. In Bangalore city, yester years had witnessed around 800 deaths with 8,000 - 10,000
injuries. In the last two years the death rate has risen to more than 1000 per year affecting the most productive age group 15 -40 years. It is alarming that major deaths and disabilities are occurring due to secondary brain damage which
is preventable. Majority of the deaths occur in the first few hours and first few days. Appropriate action in the golden hour (1st hour after the injury) will effectively avert problems and reduce the death, disability, complications, hospital stay and the related expenses. Brain is a gifted organ which has 20 billion nerve cells with innumerable connections working day and night directing and regulating every single function in the body. So it is important to protect our brain.”

Microsoft Promotes Skill Development and Developer Ecosystem at TechEd 2013

Windows 8, Windows Phone 8, Office 2013, Office 365 and Windows Azure platform together offer the biggest opportunity to the developer ecosystem

Bangalore.Microsoft kicked off “TechEd 2013,”
Microsoft’s premier technology event for developers, IT professionals, entrepreneurs and students in Bengaluru today. The event will help developers and IT professionals hone their skills in app development, and thereby add more apps to the Windows ecosystem. Microsoft is currently making significant investments in working with 1.2-million developers (the second-largest developer ecosystem) and over 1000 Independent Software Vendors to empower them with the tools, technologies and training required to develop high-end skills and to compete in a global marketplace.

Joseph Landes, General Manager - DPE, Microsoft India said, “Success of the developer ecosystem is a great triumph story in India. Microsoft has played a big role in enabling this triumph and TechEd 2013 takes it to a whole new level. Today more than ever before, developers, IT professionals and students have the opportunity to create modern apps connected to cloud services that make information more easily accessible to users, on any device, at any time.”

Microsoft TechEd 2013 saw a tremendous response from IT students and budding entrepreneurs in India, where keynote speeches, demos and workshops from experts helped them catalyze their business ambitions and realize their
full potential. With the global unemployment rate at 12.7% (Generation Opportunity) and the employability rate in the Indian IT services sector falling three times, that is, from 29.41% to 16.36% (Aspiring Minds) last year, there is
a clear need for educational institutions to produce industry-ready candidates as this may become an impediment for growth due to lack of trained manpower for product-based and research-based projects, as the IT industry in India matures. It is imperative that skill building be a focus for India’s progressive growth and to bridge the opportunity divide amongst youth in India. Microsoft’s aim is to provide the gifted and technically-skilled developer community with a supportive environment to drive path-breaking innovation globally. Windows 8, Windows Phone 8, Office 2013, Office 365 and Windows Azure platforms open up countless opportunities for developers to shape the app ecosystem across multiple devices, giving developers the chance to maximize their revenues.

Recently, Microsoft hosted Windows AppFest at Bengaluru and made history by setting a world record for the ‘Most Participants in a Software Development Marathon in One Location.’ The record has been set at 2567 developers coding non-stop for 18 hours. Developers from India and beyond participated in the event for building, designing and testing apps for the Windows platform with global mentoring and technical resources at hand. Other initiatives like ‘Tech Days,’ the ‘I Unlock Joy,’ ‘Mobile Acceleration Week’ and the first-ever women app developers event in India highlight Microsoft’s commitment towards developers, IT professionals and students to seize and lead
innovation by building successful applications on Windows platform.

Remote sensing data benefits Indian farmers, fisherme

Bangalore. Voluminous data from the Indian remote sensing satellites has benefited millions of farmers and fishermen in achieving higher productivity and making optimal utilisation of resources, a senior space scientist said Saturday.

“Studies by the premier economic research institute (NCAER) have shown that remote sensing data has accrued multiple benefits to farmers across the country with seven percent increase in productivity and helping the farm
sector to contribute about Rs.50,000 crore to the national gross domestic product (GDP) over the years,” Indian Society of Remote Sensing president V.K.Dadhwal told reporters here.

Similarly, application of remote sensing data by the fishing community contributed about Rs.24,000 crore to the GDP and saved fuel consumption by 30 percent with timely advisories on weather, sea conditions and identification of potential fishing zones for maximizing the catch. The advisories of potential fishing zones help about 90 percent of fishermen across the country in increasing their catch per unit effort with advance information on distance, direction and location of the mammals. “Potential fishing zones forecast is sent daily to all major fishing harbours and fishing cooperatives free of cost by the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information System through newspapers, radio, fax, phone, digital display boards and websites,” Dadhwal said at a symposium on the ‘Saga of Indian Remote Sensing Satellite Programme: 25 years since IRS-1A’, being held this weekend.Likewise, imagery from the constellation of our remote sensing satellites is regularly used for crop acreage and production estimation, crop health monitoring, groundwater prospecting, forest cover assessment, marine resources, rural development, wasteland mapping, environmental monitoring and disaster management. With 11 earth observation satellites in operation out of the 20
such missions launched since 1988, India has the largest constellation of remote sensing satellites in the civilian domain, dedicated to land and water, cartography, oceanography and environment, including meteorology and weather
monitoring. As a nodal agency of the state-run Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the Hyderabad-based National Remote Sensing Centre receives, processes, archives and distributes the imagery to various user agencies across the country and overseas. The space agency’s telemetry, tracking and command network(Istrac) in this tech hub monitors the health of the satellites, commands them to take pictures and estimates their orbit for observational
operations.“The indigenous remote sensing satellites provide data in the resolution range of 360mm to more than one metre besides multi-spectral, panchromatic and stereoscopic imagery,” Dadhwal pointed out.

Beginning with the launch of the first remote sensing satellite (IRS-1A) from Baikonur Cosmodrome in former Soviet Union March 17, 1988, India has come a long way and joined the select nations in having large earth observation satellites for various applications. After launching 1B and IC remote sensing spacecraft on Soviet and Russian rockets during the nineties, the space agency’s polar satellite launch vehicle (PSLV) placed 17 remote sensing satellites since 1994 from its spaceport at Sriharikota off the Bay of Bengal on Andhra coast, about 90km north east of Chennai.
Other Indian remote sensing satellites in the lower orbit are Cartosat-1 & 2 for cartography, Resourcesat-1 & 2 for survey of natural resources, Risat-1 for all-weather, dawn-to-dusk imaging, disaster management, agricultural monitoring, Ocensat-2, Megha-Tropiques and the recently launched on Feb 25 Saral for oceanographic and atmospheric studies./eom/pt-str/535words.

Karnataka’s ruling BJP behind congress in urban local bodies elections

Bangalore. Karnataka’s ruling BJP was Monday routed in the urban local bodies polls held March 7 though the party claimed it was not a pointer to the outcome of the ensuing state legislative assembly election due in May.

The opposition Congress was, however, the biggest winner in the civic polls to the 207 local bodies bagging 1,959 seats out of 4,952 for which balloting took place lastThursday.
The beleaguered Bharatiya Janatana Party was way behind with just 906 seats while the Janata Dal-Secular was third with 905.
The new regional outfit -- Karnataka Janata Party (KJP) headed by former BJP chief minister B.S.Yeddyurappa failed to set any wave as it managed only 274 seats.
The fate of anotherstate party floated by independent lawmaker B. Sriramulu, a former BJP minister and an associate of jailed mining baron G. Janardhana Reddy, was worse as it won 86 seats, drawing blank in its home turf -- Bellary in the northern region.

Independents scored big bagging 778 seats while the Communist Part of India(Marxist) won 13. The rest were taken by other smaller parties.
Elections were held for seven city corporations, 43 city municipal corporations, 65 town municipal councils and 93 town panchayats, excluding in Bangalore where civil polls were held in 2010.

Of the seven city corporations, the Congress captured Mangalore, on the west coast, Bellary in the north and Davangere in the central part. All three districts were considered BJP strongholds.
The BJP failed to gain majority in the city corporation of chief minister Jagadish Shettar’s home district Dharwad in north Karnataka, though it emerged as the single largest party.
Shettar claimed the results cannot be taken as a pointer to the outcome of the assembly poll due in two months.
The Congress said he results showed that people had “rejected” the “corrupt” BJP rule and desire a change.
The JD-S said itsperformance had disproved assertions by rivals that the party would be wiped out.
